straw bale — a building material ‘manufactured’ by solar energy and atmospheric carbon.
We’ve recently been involved in the design of several bale buildings.
One project is a simple home in a 1950’s California suburb. The design is intended to seamlessly merge with the neighborhood. Another project is taking shape in the mountains of the Eastern Sierra — a family ski lodge with traditional gable forms and large expanses of glass.

A simple, unassuming 3-bed, 2-bath suburban home that merges seamlessly merge with the housing stock around it – this post-and-beam strawbale infill project aims to demonstrate a better way of building housing for everyday Americans.

Tucked against the Eastern Sierra, this home functions as mountain lodge for a family of climbers and skiers.
